In a similar manner, you’ll also get to see Lake Naivasha, a scenic freshwater lake that houses a large population of hippos along with bird species like African fish eagles, pelicans, and kingfishers.

Spot Majestic Elephants at Amboseli National Park

Being one of East Africa’s most favorable destinations for game drive experiences and wildlife safaris, Kenya has been on the travel list for thousands of adventure lovers!

Among its many spectacular wildlife destinations, the Amboseli National Park certainly stands out as a must-visit destination. Also referred to as “the land of giants,” the park was established in 1974 and known for its high concentration of African elephants.

4 of the Big 5 can be found here (besides the rhinos) along with other animal species like cheetahs, giraffes, wildebeests, impalas, Cape buffaloes, baboons, vervet monkeys, and warthogs. As for the park’s bird life, there are estimated to be 400 species of birds, where a few of the most common ones include African jacana, Grey crowned crane, lesser flamingo, and long toed lapwing.

In terms of Amboseli’s natural landscapes and ecosystem, it consists of open grass plains, acacia woodlands, thorny bushlands, and seasonal swamps. One of the park’s most highlighted destinations is the Observation Hill, which offers panoramic views of the park from a higher elevation.

Catch a Glimpse of the Mesmerizing Lake Naivasha

Next on the tour you’ll explore Lake Naivasha, which is a freshwater lake located within the Great Rift Valley. Before visiting the lake, you’ll briefly stop by Escarpment Viewpoint (also known as Rift Valley Viewpoint), from where you'll be able to catch a glimpse of the Great Rift Valley Floor.

What sets this lake apart from others is its natural composition, as many Rift Valley lakes are alkaline in nature, but Naivasha isn’t. It still remains a freshwater lake due to its underground outflow and natural sedimentation process.

Lake Naivasha is also said to be one of the best places in Naivasha to see hippos, as it provides a natural habitat for these animal species. Furthermore, this lake is also home to over 400 bird species; a few common ones include African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and cormorants.

Spot the Big 5 in Masai Mara National Reserve

It wouldn’t be possible to visit Kenya and not stop by the renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. Built in 1961, this attraction offers visitors a look into Africa’s untamed natural beauty, as it features many varied ecosystems ranging from savannah grasslands, riverine forests, acacia woodlands, and seasonal swamps.

Tracing back the reserve’s name, the word “Maasai” is one of Kenya’s oldest indigenous communities, who have for generations resided here, and the word “Mara” translates to "spotted," which denotes the acacia trees that are scattered all across the savannah plains.

Both the big 5 and 9 can be found here along with a wide variety of other wild species and birds. This reserve also shares its border with Serengeti National Park (situated in Tanzania), which forms a vast interconnected ecosystem known as the Serengeti-Mara.

Additionally, this reserve is said to be the most alive during the dry season (June to October) as millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles migrate within the Serengeti-Mara ecosystems in search of fresh food and water.

Discover the Beauty of Lake Nakuru National Park

To end your trip on a memorable note, you'll also be visiting Lake Nakuru National Park. Though small in size, this park surely makes up for it with its varied natural resources and diverse animal life and scenic vistas.

The park’s major highlight is definitely Lake Nakuru, which attracts flamingoes, rhinos, hippos and giraffes. Likewise, it’s also known to be a paradise for bird lovers, as many various species of birds can be seen, especially flocking in and around the lake and often seen feeding on the blue/green algae and small insects found here.

After reaching your accommodation, complete the check-in procedure and take some time off to relax and de-stress.

Day 2

First Game Drive in Amboseli National Park.

At. 06:00 AM: After having a fulfilling breakfast at the lodge, you’ll be driven to Amboseli National Park from Nairobi, which can take around 3-4 hours to reach. Here, you’ll be going on a game drive.

During the journey to the national park, you can sit back, relax, and admire the scenic views out of your window, which will consist of vast plains dotted with towering acacia trees, traditional Maasai villages, colorful open-air markets, and local Maasai herders leading their cattle to nearby farmlands.

Also known as “the land of giants”, Amboseli is known for its large population of African bush elephants that have been living here for centuries, estimated to be around 1800-2000! You’ll find these gentle giants typically roaming in family groups and larger herds, especially around the park’s wetlands and grasslands.

Furthermore, the destination will also offer you a perfect introduction to Kenya’s rich biodiversity and natural landscapes for many first time visitors, as they’re able to witness an array of ecosystems ranging from open grass plains to acacia woodlands, thorny bushlands, and seasonal swamps.

During the game drive, you may even catch a glimpse of 4 of the Big 5, which consist of animals like lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes besides rhinos, as they were sadly poached in large numbers in the past, which led to their extinction in the park.

Alongside this, the park also has many other wildlife species like cape buffaloes, impala, Maasai giraffe, Grant’s zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests. On clear days, you might also catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa’s tallest mountain) situated on the southern horizon of the park.

For lunch you’ll be going to your lodge, as it is located nearby the national park, and returning back after having your meal. After a full day of exploring Amboseli, you’ll make your way to your pre-booked lodge near the park, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the rest of the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included.

Day 3

Second Game Drive in Amboseli National Park.

At. 06:00 AM: After having a fulfilling breakfast at the lodge, get ready to spend another day at Amboseli National Park. You’ll be going on another game drive this day and might be able to see a great variety of Kenya's diverse wildlife species.

You can also ask your guide to take you to areas of the park that you had missed the previous day, which allow you to have a more enjoyable and diverse wildlife viewing experience. Likewise, your guide will also track wildlife activity throughout the day and help you catch sight of the park’s rare species, large herds of animals, and predators.

After spending another fantastic day at Amboseli National Park, you’ll be driven back to your lodge, where you’ll be spending the rest of the evening. Have your delicious dinner and then head back to your room for a good night’s rest.

Optional: If time permits, you can also visit a nearby Maasai Village, which will allow you to learn about the Maasai community (one of Kenya’s oldest ethnic groups) and their traditional way of living. If you choose to do so, please inform us in advance, as prior booking is required.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included.

Day 4

Lake Naivasha Sightseeing.

At. 07:00 AM: Start your day by having a delicious breakfast at the hotel, and after this, you’ll be taken to Lake Naivasha from Amboseli, which can take around 2 to 3 hours to reach.

Located in the Great Rift Valley, this attraction is a freshwater lake where you can find a high concentration of hippos along with a variety of bird species like African fish eagles, pelicans and kingfishers.

Before entering the lake, you’ll firstly stop by Escarpment Viewpoint (also known as Rift Valley Viewpoint), from where you'll be able to catch a glimpse of the Great Rift Valley Floor that consists of vast green plains, farmlands, and broad plains.

Note: The Great Rift Valley floor is a massive linear line consisting of geographical depressions (vast sunken areas) that were formed due to the separation of tectonic plates.

As the view from up here is absolutely mesmerizing, take as many photos/videos as you please to best preserve the memories of this scenic attraction. Continuing on, you’ll proceed on your journey to Lake Naivasha, where you’ll see many colorful wooden fishing boats scattered across the lake, as fishing is one of the town’s major sources of income.

Keep your eyes peeled, as you might get to see hippos swimming in the refreshing waters of this lake. Most of the time, you can only see the top part of their body, primarily their eyes, ears, and nose peeking out of the deep, blue waters!

Additionally, as this lake is home to over 400 bird species, a few you might witness during your visit are African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and cormorants.

Lunch will also be served during your sightseeing break, with timings arranged by your tour guide’s plan for the day.

After all your sightseeing activities are over, you’ll make your way to your pre-booked resort in Naivasha. Upon arrival, complete the check-in procedure, have your dinner, and enjoy your overnight stay.

Optional: To get a closer view of Lake Naivasha, you can also choose to go on a boat ride, which will take you to the nearby Crescent Island at an additional charge. If you choose to do so, please inform us in advance, as prior booking is required.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included.

Day 5

First Game Drive in Masai Mara National Reserve.

At. 06:00 AM: After having your breakfast at the resort, you’ll be heading to Masai Mara National Reserve from Naivasha, which can take around 4-5 hours to reach.

On your drive, you’ll firstly pass many scenic natural landscapes consisting of agricultural landscapes, picturesque lakes, and rolling hills that you can admire while sitting comfortably in your vehicle.

Being one of Africa’s most renowned national reserves, Maasai Mara is located in southwestern Kenya and borders the renowned Serengeti National Park. Firstly established as a wildlife sanctuary and later turned into a prime game drive destination, this park is well known for its rich biodiversity, the Big 5 and 9, diverse animal habitats, stunning landscapes, and the Maasai tribe.

Your itinerary this day will consist of firstly visiting the reserve from the outside. The sheer sight of this Mara will surely leave you astonished, as you’ll be able to see vast sweeping golden plains dotted with acacia trees. If lucky, you might even spot herbivorous animals like elephants, gazelles, impalas, wildebeests, waterbucks, and zebras grazing freely across the plains!

You’ll then be taken to your pre-booked lodge located nearby the reserve after a short introduction of the reserve from your tour guide, where you’ll complete the check-in procedure and then head for lunch.

After a satisfying meal and resting for some time, you’ll finally make your way to your first game drive in Masai Mara National Reserve.

Masai Mara is certainly one of Kenya’s larger national parks, as it is almost triple the size of Amboseli National Park you visited a few days prior. What makes this specific reserve an unmissable spot for many wildlife enthusiasts is its abundant population of the Big 5 (lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes) and Big 9 (which includes the same animals listed above plus cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, and zebras).

Other animals that you might encounter during your day of exploration here include hyenas, jackals, vervet monkeys, and hippos. After all, your game drive in Masai Mara National Reserve is over, and you’ll make your way to your lodge, where you’ll get to enjoy a delicious dinner and spend the rest of the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included.

Day 6

Second Game Drive in Masai Mara National Reserve.

At. 05:00 AM: After having your delicious breakfast at the lodge, get ready to spend another epic day at Masai Mara National Reserve. As your accommodation is located pretty close to the reserve, you’ll be going for a sunrise game drive, which is said to be one of the prime times to visit for game viewing, as predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards are said to be the most active and typically hunt for prey.

Additionally, as the morning approaches, you'll be able to spot herds of elephants, zebras, and antelopes grazing in open grasslands.

Home to more than 400 bird species that reside in this national reserve’s diverse ecosystems, a few common ones you might encounter during the morning hours include lilac breasted rollers, starlings, bee eaters, schalow’s turacos, secretary birds, ostriches, kori bustards, and sacred ibis. You’ll find these bird species usually in the open savannahs, tree branches, bushes, riverbanks, and woodland areas of the reserve.

For a much more immersive experience, you can also request your tour guide to take you to sections of the reserve that you might have missed the day earlier, as the Mara comprises a large area and consists of many mixed ecosystems. You’ll spend this day again looking for the Big 5 along with other species of animals like hippos, giraffes, cheetahs, crocodiles, jackals, waterbucks, and baboons.

Likewise, lunch will be provided during your sightseeing break with timings arranged by your tour guide. After spending another fantastic day at this national reserve, you’ll head back to the lodge that you stayed in yesterday, where you’ll have your dinner and spend the rest of the night.

Optional: For a much richer and more immersive experience in the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can also add a hot air balloon safari to the itinerary. If you choose to do so, please notify us in advance, as prior booking is required for this.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Included.

Day 7

Game Drive in Lake Nakuru National Park.

At. 06:00 AM: After having your breakfast, you’ll be exploring the last destination of this tour, which is Lake Nakuru National Park. Located around 5-6 hours from your lodge, you’ll surely enjoy this drive, as you’ll pass many changing landscapes. Simply sit back, relax and take this time to appreciate the breathtaking scenery out of your window.

Lake Nakuru National Park is known for its high concentration of pink flamingos that majorly flock to Lake Nakuru, especially during the dry season. Consisting of diverse ecosystems like acacia woodlands, wetlands, savannah ecosystems, and open grassland.

Useful Money and Currency Tips

When traveling from Nepal to Kenya, it's essential to consider currency exchange and money management tips to ensure a smooth and efficient trip.

When traveling to these nations, it is advisable to bring some US currency to ensure readiness for initial expenses and unforeseen circumstances. We advise you to carry around 1000-2500 USD in cash, as this amount can cover expenses such as meals, additional places, and shopping.

Likewise, cash is generally preferred in many local restaurants, small souvenir shops, street markets, and rural areas, where around 3000-6000 Kenyan Shillings is ideal for most purchases, whereas credit cards (like Visa and Mastercard) can be used in many hotels, shopping malls, and larger establishments.

By preparing adequately with cash and understanding local currency practices, you can enhance the experience and facilitate smooth transactions throughout your stay in Kenya.

Learn about Game Drive Etiquette and Essentials

While Kenya is one of the best destinations in the world for game drives and wildlife safaris, all travelers must take their safety seriously while exploring these sites. During game drive experiences, stay inside the vehicle and do not approach any of the wild animals.

Furthermore, we suggest you wear neutral/light colored clothing and avoid wearing bright, colorful items so that you’re able to blend with the natural environment. If you happen to come across any wild animal, don’t make any loud noises, as it can startle and sometimes even provoke the animals. Lastly, always follow the rules and advice set by the tour operator.

A few essentials that you can carry during your game drives in Kenya include:

  • Personal first aid kit
  • Wide brimmed hat for sun protection
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal medications
  • Electronics like phones and cameras
  • Binoculars (if you have them)
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A lightweight jacket if you’re going on afternoon game drives

Ensure You Have Travel Insurance

It is advised by many travel experts that all tourists visiting Kenya must obtain travel insurance, as it is a mandatory requirement implemented by the Kenyan government.

While selecting the insurance type, a few essential components that you must look into include emergency medical coverage, medical evacuation, and trip cancellation/interruptions (to name a few).

Kenya is hugely popular for its wildlife safaris/game drives, so at times visitors are often required to travel to remote and isolated areas, so it is best to have travel insurance beforehand, as it helps to provide a sense of safety when traveling to foreign and unknown places.

Get All the Needed Vaccinations

Before your departure date to Kenya, you can also visit your doctor and discuss which vaccinations and medications you might be needing, as this depends on your own personal medical history, previously taken vaccines, and the specific places that you’re planning to visit in this nation.

Visa Requirements and Travel Documents

Nepali citizens need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to travel to Kenya, which stays valid for up to 90 days. For this, travelers need to fulfill certain visa requirements and submit all the necessary travel documents, which are stated down below:

  • Scanned copy of your passport with a validity of at least 6 months.
  • Scanned copy of your recent passport-size photo.
  • Proof of an onward/return ticket, accommodation details, and contact information.
  • Travel Insurance.

Best Time to Visit Kenya

The best time to visit Kenya depends on your travel interests and preferences, but in a general sense, the most ideal time to visit this nation is during the dry season that begins from June to October. During this period, Kenya goes through a warm period, offering plenty of sunny days with low chances of rainfall.

As you’ll be going to a number of national parks/reserves like Amboseli, Masai Mara, and Lake Nakuru, these months offer the perfect atmosphere for visiting these renowned attractions, as the vegetation throughout these months stays pretty thin and visible, providing a clearer picture of the wild animals found in these areas.

Similarly, the great migration also takes place from June to October, when millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles migrate from the Serengeti National Park to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, which is surely a sight to behold! Plus, these sites provide the most perfect locations for travelers who are into wildlife photography as well.
