Hanoi - The Capital City

Hanoi is Vietnam's capital city, also known as Hoan Kiem District or simply 36 Streets. This city was first known as Long Biên, which symbolizes dragon interweaving. It is one of the second most populous cities in Vietnam, with a wide range of architectural styles, including French colonial architecture. It consists of many cultural and historical places, which are its major attractions. It is also a gastronomic paradise, offering a sensory journey through Vietnam's diverse cuisine. This city has many streets within the city centre where well-preserved colonial buildings, ancient pagodas, and unique museums stand proud. You will be visiting some of the notable destinations, such as:

Temple of Literature

Located to the south of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, the Temple of Literature is one of the oldest universities in Vietnam and holds a rare example of well-preserved traditional Vietnamese architecture. The Temple of Literature was founded in 1070 by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong as a temple to worship the Chinese philosopher Confucius. It has five courtyards, or areas, of varying styles. These Courtyards are dedicated to the beauty of literature and contain treasures of the temple, and a small museum displays inkwells, pens, books, and personal artifacts belonging to some of the students who studied at the temple.

Hoan Kiem Lake

Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is a freshwater lake that is the historical center of Hanoi. It wraps around a temple sitting in the center on a small island, making for a scenic and relaxing escape from the chaos and bustle of the Old Quarter’s streets. In the middle of the lake, there is a small island with a small stone pagoda. You can perform different types of water activities, like paddling a boat and enjoying the lake scenery or taking a cyclo tour around the lake.

Shopping Markets

Hanoi is also famous for its marketplace and streets. One of the notable markets is Dong Xuan Market, located in the center district of Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, Vietnam. It is Hanoi's largest indoor market, offering a wide range of goods such as fresh produce, souvenirs, accessories, and clothing at reasonable prices. Another prominent market is on Hang Gai Street, situated on the edge of Hanoi Old Quarter, near the northwestern side of Hoan Kiem Lake. This street is the best place in Hanoi to shop for high-quality, fashionable silk materials, traditional Vietnamese apparel, and home furnishings. With more than a hundred shops, most of which specialize in silk or silk-related products and services, it is a must-visit for anyone interested in Vietnamese textiles.

Hang Ngang Street is one of the busiest marketplaces in Hanoi and is typical of the Old Quarter, featuring a narrow, winding street with its own unique charm. Lined with old architecture and vibrant shops that have been passed down through generations, it is renowned for its traditional craft stores, which offer the artistic heritage of Hanoi. This street was once famous for selling fabric and tea, but now it is a hub for many fashion, cosmetics, and souvenir shops. Additionally, Hang Dao Street, formerly known as Silk Street during the French colonial period, offers an abundance of commodities, especially silk. Tourists can find dozens of fashion and jewelry shops, watch shops, and shoe stores, making it a bustling area for shopping in Hanoi.
