Antalya - Gateway to Turkish Riviera

Formerly known as Attaleia in the past, Antalya is a flourishing province and city located in Istanbul. This city was founded by Attalus II Philadelphus during the 2nd century, was a major seaport and currently serves as one of the top tourist attractions in Turkey. Also nicknamed the “Turkish Riviera” due to this province sharing a part of its area with the Turkish Riviera (a stretch of coastline). This vibrant city is popular for its tranquil beaches, historical landmarks and artistic museums. Here you will be visiting Kaleici, a historic district and town, to explore these spectacular sites:

  • Hadrian’s Gate: Stop by the popular Hadrian’s Gate that was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian during the 13th century to celebrate his visit to Antalya. Consisting of three arched-way gates with four marble columns located in front of it, the Hadrian’s Gate is supported by two large towers on either side of it. Measuring at approximately 26.2 ft tall, these three arches are designed in a detailed manner with intricate flower designs and carved lion heads.
  • Broken Minaret: One of the historic destinations in Kaleici is the Broken Minaret, which in the past used to be a temple built during the 2nd century. The temple was later destroyed and reconstructed as a church, which was then later changed into a mosque where a minaret (a slender tower) was added next to it. After a fire broke out, the minaret along with the ruins of the mosque can be seen in the current time.
  • Hidirlik Tower: The Hidirlik Tower is said to be one of the longest surviving monuments of Antalya and was believed to have been constructed during the Roman Era (14th century). Made out of rocks and comprising two stories, the bottom floor of the tower is built in a square shape, whereas the top floor consists of a cylindrical shape. Additionally, this tower in the past was said to play many significant roles, as it was used as a defensive structure to identify possible attacks on Kaleici, along with being used as a lighthouse/viewing point as well. Along with seeing this monument from the outside, you’ll also be able to see the Antalya Bay located in front of the tower.
  • Duden Waterfalls: To add more fun and excitement to your travel days, you will also visit the Duden Waterfalls, which consist of 2 waterfalls, i.e. Upper and Lower waterfalls, which measure 20 meters and 40 meters, respectively. Both sources of the waterfalls start from the Taurus mountain and there are ample amounts of lush green areas near the waterfalls that help create a serene and tranquil atmosphere that you can bask in! Additionally, the lower waterfall also offers you a scenic drop into the Mediterranean Sea and is located within the Duden Park.

Konya - City of Rumi

While traveling to Cappadocia en route, you will also be stopping by Konya to visit the famous Mevlana Museum, which is also known as the Mevlana Mausoleum. Konya is a province and metropolitan municipality located in the central region of Turkey and covers an area of 38,873 square kilometers. As Mevlana Jalal-al din Rumi spent most of his adult life as a poet and scholar, where this province was also his final resting place, it is also nicknamed as the city of Rumi. In the picturesque province of Konya, you will be visiting the Mevlana Museum.

  • Mevlana Museum: Considered a major pilgrimage site in Konya, Mevlana Mausoleum, also known as Mevlana Mausoleum, was built during the 12th century in Konya. This holy museum houses the tomb of Jalal-al din Rumi, famously known as Rumi/Mevlana, a renowned poet and founder of the Whirling Dervishes (a religious group that believes that art forms such as songs and dances are the path to enlightenment and helps build a closer connection to the divine). Along with being a museum, it also has a mosque with a library as well where various works of Rumi can be preserved in the form of books and scriptures.

Consisting of many fairy chimneys (rock formations), the valley has been rooted in a legend, where two lovers coming from different families were separated due to internal conflicts between the family members of the couple, so it was believed that supernatural forces created these fairy chimneys located within the valley to symbolize their love for one another, hence also giving the valley its name. Additionally, this valley has many trails, so for visitors who love to hike/trek, this destination can be perfect for you to visit as well.
  • Cavusin Village: Located between two towns of Cappadocia (Avanos and Gerome), Cavusin Village truly looks like a historic village right out of a fantasy book! Additionally, there are also hiking routes here, ideal for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts as well!
  • Ozkonak Underground City: One of the most unique destinations you will be visiting in Cappadocia is surely the Ozkonak Underground City. Believed to be formed by the Roman Empire (Byzantines) during the 5th and 6th century, this underground city was developed to serve as a hiding area for many people of Cappadocia during times of attacks and invasions. Consisting of 11 floors altogether, only 4 floors are open to the public to see at the current time.
