Bhairav Kunda Trek Overview


Bhairav Kunda Trek is the high altitude lake trekking in the Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal. Situated at an altitude of 4240 m above sea level, this trekking is one of the best as it takes you to the rural and pristine natural settlement. The holy lake Bhairav Kunda also holds a huge religious significance besides it. It has been a popular destination for pilgrimages and wonderful mountain settlements. 

Newly discovered and unexplored Bhairav Kunda Trek is one of the best trekking in the Langtang region of Nepal. Bhairav Kunda is also a major pilgrimage site dedicated to the destructive form of Lord Shiva- Bhairav. This is an excellent pilgrimage attraction in the rural mountain region where you will get a wonderful opportunity to explore the natural beauty, flora, and fauna along with the diverse spectrum of the people. 

Pristine traditional villages, spectacular Himalayan panorama and the holy lake itself are the major attractions of the trek. The mixed geographical variations in this mountain abode are excellent and offer diverse beauty.

The starting point of the trek is Jalbire. Jalbire is a place inhabited by the Newars, providing some Newari cultural glimpses making it a fascinating cultural trek. The trail to the Bhairav Kunda is not so developed and rural but you will get a wonderful opportunity to explore the natural beauty and the cultural spectrums. This is the moderate level trek, and beginners can indulge themselves in the trekking to the holy Bhairav Kunda. 

The unique blend of mountain scenery, terraced fields, and the scattered cultural groups is the best part to explore along the trail. Furthermore, you will be facilitated with teahouses and camps where you will get insights into the typical lifestyle of people in the rural region of Nepal. Bhairav Kunda is the kept secret of nature where nature unveils its true colours providing lifetime experiences. 

Trekking to Bhairav Kunda starts with a drive to Jalbire from Kathmandu valley. The rough and bumpy road yet amazing natural offerings to the Jalbire makes the beginning a wonderful one. Jalbire is rich in Newari culture and home to the Hindu temple of god Bishnu which lies on the banks of the Balephi River. The Jalbire is also a major point in the ancient Nepal Tibet trade route. 

The trek begins from Jalbire. Walking through the waterfalls and small Tamang villages all the way to Chanaute offers amazing experiences in the diverse places of Nepal. In Chanaute, the Brahmins and Chettri people live offering some cultural variations in the trek. The further trek to Khanigaun offers beautiful villages, stunningly terraced fields, and streams along with the Newari culture. 

The steep ascends from Kanigaun will take you to the wonderful Forest camp where you will be exploring Rhododendron forest and the occasional grazing pasture. The nomad houses for cattle, beautiful birds and wild animals will make you feel like a true naturalistic explorer to the mountains. The trek from the forest camp will take you to Pati, where you can enjoy splendid mountain views. The further trek will take you to the astounding Bhairav Kunda itself. You will explore the excellent glacial beauty of the lake and mindblowing scenery in the mountain region of Nepal. 

You will explore the glimmering mountain ranges namely Langtang, Jugal Himal, Rolwaling and the Tibetan Range from Bhairav Kunda. Also, early in the morning, you will visit the Bhairav Kunda top, from where you can have the wonderful sunrise views. The further trek from Bhairav Kunda will take you to the Sherpa Gaun. The returning trek further to Larche and Hot Spring will take you to the Kodari Highway from where you can get a drive to Kathmandu. 

The Bhairav Kunda Trek is one of the best rural trekking in the mountains of Nepal. You can explore the diverse beauty of the mountains, variations in the culture and nature alongside the excellent Himalayan views. 

ITINERARY

  • DAY 1
    Arrival at Kathmandu, Transfer to Hotel.

    Your Arrival Time (?) Our office representative will meet and greet you at Kathmandu Airport and transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu.

    At 06:00 PM: In the evening we will meet for a coffee and will brief you the details of your trek program.
    Elevation: 1,350M

  • DAY 2
    Sightseeing around kathmandu valley and Trek Preparation.
    At 10:00 AM: You will visit for a full day sightseeing of Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath. Besides sightseeing, you can do the required shopping for your trek.

  • DAY 3
    Drive to Jalbire.
    At 08:00 AM: After having breakfast we will head towards Jalbire. It is about a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu to Jalbire. During this drive, you can enjoy the view of beautiful mountains and rural villages along the roadside. Driving on a bumpy road, we enter Balephi Valley alongside Balephi River and continue on the off-road until we reach Jalbire. Jalbire is rich in Newari culture and home to the Hindu temple of god Bishnu which lies on the banks of the Balephi River.  This town used to be one of the main towns on the trade route to Tibet. The highway you will drive on is also known as the Nepal-Tibet Friendship Highway. Overnight stay at tented camp.

  • DAY 4
    Trek to Chanaute.
    At 08:00 AM: After breakfast, our trek will start. We walk through a waterfall and some small Tamang villages to reach Chanaute. Chanute is a small village where people belonging to the Chhetri and Brahmin communities live. You can enjoy the great mountain view from the campsite. Overnight stay at tented camp.

  • DAY 5
    Trek to Khani Gaon.
    At 08:00 AM: After breakfast, we will move towards Khani Gaun. Khani means “source of mines” and Gaon means “Village”.The walk is a little more challenging as we have to follow uphill steeps. On this day you will be passing through beautiful villages, stunningly terraced fields and streams. Khani Gaun is a Newar village and it is believed that around the mid-18th century, before the unification of Nepal, during the war between Gorkha and Bhaktapur, natives of Bhaktapur came here to save their lives. Overnight stay at tented camp.

  • DAY 6
    Rest day with local village sightseeing.
    At 08:00 AM: Today after breakfast, we visit Khani village and meet the local folks and explore the beautiful village of Khanigaon and enjoying the surrounding mountain views. We will also visit Dalle Pokhari and enjoy Newari food. You will get to explore and to study the culture and tradition of this picturesque Newari village. Overnight stay at tented camp.

  • DAY 7
    Trek to Forest Camp.
    At 08:00 AM: After having breakfast, we will ascend steeply through beautiful rhododendron forest and the occasional grazing pasture, where we can see nomad houses for cattle. This is a great chance to capture the scenery of the rhododendron forest and you can also see beautiful birds and many wild animals. Overnight stay at tented camp.
    Elevation: 3,150M

  • DAY 8
    Trek to Pati.

    At 08:00 AM: The trek today is tougher as you have to climb upwards for around 4 hours. But the enchanting views of pine and rhododendron forest will be there to make your walk pleasurable. After reaching Pati we can relax in the rest houses built at Pati for pilgrimages. You will enjoy views of splendid mountains. The rest houses are for those who come for a holy homage pilgrimage to Bhairav Kund on auspicious time as per the Hindu calendar. Overnight stay at tented camp.

  • DAY 9
    Trek to Bhairab Kunda.
    At 08:00 AM: After breakfast, we will move towards Bhairav Kunda. First 1 hour walk goes uphill following further about 2 and a half hours. Many people from different parts of Nepal visit this place to take a holy bath mainly during June/July. The pilgrims also do worshipping to the Bhairav (the destructive form of Lord Shiva) in the temple found nearby the lake. Overnight stay at tented camp.
    Elevation: 4,250M

  • DAY 10
    Trek to Sherpa Gaon.
    At 05:30 AM: We will start our trek a little early so that we can have exciting views of sunrise from Bhairav Kund top. We also can get lovely views of glimmering mountain ranges namely Langtang, Jugal Himal, Rolwaling and the Tibetan Range. After returning back from bhairav kunda we will have our breakfast and move towards sherpa gaon. Sherpa Gaon is about 6 hours walking from the top. Overnight stay at tented camp.

  • DAY 11
    Trek to Larche and visit Hot spring (Kodari highway).
    At 08:00 AM: This is our final day hike After breakfast we leave for Larcha. Our journey goes through the back of Bhote Khosi. We can reach Larcha in about 4-5 hours. Before reaching Larcha, we can have a hot spring bath and then walk for a further 30 minutes; here we can have hot spring bath and chill out after the backbreaking trek. Overnight stay at tented camp.

  • DAY 12
    Drive to Kathmandu.
    At 08:00 AM: After breakfast, we drive back to Kathmandu. It is about 6 hours scenic drive back to Kathmandu and we then transfer to our hotel for refreshment and rest. Stay overnight at your hotel and we also enjoy a farewell dinner.

  • DAY 13
    Departure.
    You will be free until your flight time; we will drop you at Kathmandu Airport 3 hour before your flight.
